Geocache Description:


Looking east down Turnagain Arm from Gull Rock, 2 miles beyond the cache site.
The trail hugs the shoreline at right, and Halfway Island is visible directly above Mrs NorthWes. Fantastic views abound along almost the entire trail. We brought a picnic lunch and plenty of water - much to geodog Aero's delight!

The Gull Rock Trail ranges from grass-bordered dirt beneath birch trees to a needle-cushioned trail under giant spruce. Roots and rocks on the trail make it a seriously technical ride for the two-wheeler crowd, and the drop-offs on the north side of the trail are extremely steep. Areas open to light explode with growth in the summer, building tunnel-like pathways under towering grasses and devils club. At several points hikers cross scree slopes offering dramatic vistas to the north and east across Turnagain Arm. When you're close to this cache the trail enters an eerie 'dark boundary' of dense spruce growth which has fallen victim to spruce bark beetles. The path gains about 600 feet of elevation gently across the 5.1 mile journey out to Gull Rock.

The ammocan hide is placed on Chugach National Forest land, just over a half-mile east from the Refuge boundary marker on the trail, and about 3.3 trail miles out from the campground. Caches are not allowed on National Wildlife Refuges, so the boundary was given a wide berth to ensure its sanctity.

Be sure to find Ak Hiker's 'Gull Rock Trail' cache (GC14CWD) on the way. Cachers who log benchmarks are encouraged to work their way to the very northern side of Gull Rock and recover the unique 'CAPE RESET' benchmark (UW7737), placed in 1942.
