Just outside of the port, but you may have to go around the walls. Walking is mostly on the road. This is a regular cache with travel bugs and a geocoin. Excellent cache for someone arriving on a cruise ship.
There are many cruise ships docking in Civitavecchia. When the passengers depart, most of them take tour buses into Rome and do not get to see this beautiful city. The port of Civitavecchia has become the most important in Italy. For those geocachers that are arriving by cruise ship, staying in the city of Civitavecchia is a wonderful option, rather than traveling into Roma. You can catch a free bus that will take you from the Port into the city. There you can witness the life of local Italians, rather tan those in Roma that are there to cater to tourists. Save your souvinier shopping. I did all my shopping in one place, with an Etruscan style, off the beaten path, on Via Enrico Toti. (Olive Oil, Balsamic Vinegar, T-Shirts, jewelry, wine.) While you are in Civitavecchia, you must visit the open air market, where residents purchase the freshest fish, meats and vegetables. While in Civitavecchia, you should see the Michelangelo Fortress, the Vanvitello Fountain (inside the port) the National Archaelogical Museum and the Traino Municipal Theatre, where you can see a beautiful fresco.
The cache is hidden just outside the Port, behind the fishing boats. The neighborhood is safe, but it needs to be cleaned up a little. It was difficult to find a spot within walking distance of the Port that would accomodate a regular size cache, where travel bugs could be placed. If you have a travel bug, please consider placing it here.
