The large bell which was cast in 1847 for the Park Hill Presbyterian Mission Church, at Park Hill, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, is one of the oldest in Oklahoma. The bell was hung in the belfry of the brick church at Park Hill, there to remain until the breaking out of the Civil War.On a cold morning in January, a school boy filled a stove in a new schoolroom recently built at the south end of the original building, the stove pipe became red hot and the building caught fire and quickly became a mass of flames. The bell fell into the burning timbers and planks and was melted into a shapeless mass. This metal was sent to the Andrew McNeeley Bell Company, West Troy, New York, original casters of the bell, and it was recast with the same inscriptions and now hangs in the belfry of the Park Hill Presbyterian Church, Park Hill, Oklahoma.

Sequoyah never learned to read or write English, but while in Georgia he became captivated by whiteman's ability to communicate by making marks on paper and reading from "talking leaves." He began work on developing a Cherokee writing system in 1809. During the war, he became convinced he was on the right path. Unlike white soldiers, he did not write letters home and could not read military orders.

After the war Sequoyah began in earnest to create symbols that would make words. He and his daughter, Ayoka, played games using the symbols. He became obsessed with developing a new Cherokee alphabet writing system because he knew it would help his people. Sequoyah became a recluse in his obsession to perfect the writing system. He endured constant ridicule by friends and even family members, who said he was insane or practicing witchcraft.
Finally, after twelve years of labor, ridicule and abuse he finally reduced the complex language into 86 symbols, each representing a unique sound of Cherokee speech. In 1821, after a demonstration of the system to amazed tribal elders, the Cherokee Nation adopted his alphabet, now called a 'syllabary'. Thousands of Cherokees learned to read and write within a few years.

Billy Coleman grew up in the Ozark Mountains on a little farm with his parents and three younger sisters. Billy's sole desire is to have a pair of coonhound dogs, but his parents refuse. He asks his parents for a pair of hunting hounds, but since the family is not as wealthy as others, all his father can offer him is a farm collie from next door's farm. Billy becomes physically sick for want of the dogs. Then he decides to earn the dogs himself after finding a magazine with a section that advertises dogs for sale for $25 each. The magazine was discarded by fishermen that were sitting on a log and later left. On the bank where they fish, Billy offers a prayer to God to help him get his dogs. Billy does odd jobs and sells food and bait to the fishermen to earn money. After two years, he earns enough, and his grandfather orders the dogs. When the paper confirming the purchase comes back, Grandpa tells Billy that someone will bring him to town by car next week to fetch his pups. However, Billy is too excited and walks to town that very night to fetch his pups from the train station in Tahlequah. After a couple of misadventures in town, Billy manages to get his pups. He carries them home in a gunny sack. On the way home he stops by the fishermen's bank, where he had first said his prayer. He tries to think of names for his dogs, but cannot think of any. Finally, he chooses the names Old Dan and Little Ann.
