AS OF SPRING 2008 PARTS OF THIS BEACH INCLUDING THE AREA WHERE THE
CACHE IS PLACED MAY BE CLOSED BY THE NPS DUE TO NESTING MIGRATORY
BIRDS IN THE AREA. PLEASE OBSERVE AND OBEY ALL BEACH CLOSURES (AS
CRAZY AS THEY MAY BE) AND DO NOT TRY TO ACCESS THIS CACHE DURING
TIMES WHEN BEACH ACCESS IS PROHIBITED. CROSSING THE NPS MARKED
BOUNDARIES COULD SUBJECT YOU TO FINES AND OTHER SORTS OF TROUBLE.
IN ADDITION, IF WE DON'T OBEY THE CLOSURES, THE NPS WILL JUST CLOSE
MORE OF THE BEACH - WHICH WOULD BE A BUMMER. Lt. Robert Maynard of
the Royal Navy sent by Gov. Spotswood of Virginia in the sloop
"Ranger" killed the pirate Blackbeard off shore in 1718....Little
did he know that Blackbeard marked his treasure with his trusty GPS
so that years later visitors to Ocracoke "Blackbeard's Island"
could still locate his plunder.
If you don't have a boat like Blackbeard you can access this
cache with a 4wd vehicle - but only at low tide! There are some
things in the cache to keep you busy -- but not for 6 hours -- so
make sure you keep track of the tides!
This is also a fairly easy walk down the beach from either
direction if you are not set up for beach driving.
You should be able to access this cache with very minimal impact
to the dunes. Please try to stay off the dunes as much as possible
and don't destroy the dune grasses (otherwise the entire island
will wash away and you would not want to be responsible for
that!)
By the way, this is a great surf fishing spot if you are in to
surf fishing at all!
