Red Land was a small farming community located two or three
miles east of Kirby. The Kirby family was the first to settle in
Red Land around 1850. The town of Kirby was named for this
family.
As people moved west this little community began to grow. It had
a grist mill, store, school, cotton gin, it also had a brick yard.
Bricks sold for 1 cent each. There was a church and this cemetery.
Some of the early settlers are buried here.
I remember finding this cemetery years ago while hunting. The
headstone I remember is the Woodman Of The World stone.
This cemetery was gated off by the timber company and the
hunting lease on which it is located. People could not get to the
cemetery. After a lengthy court battle the gates was removed, or
moved back where anyone who wanted could access this old cemetery.
There is a mailbox inside the cemetery with a logbook for all who
visits to sign. Take time to look around. Several of my friends
worked hard for all to visit this cemetery.
Hope you enjoy.
Because of the hunting lease and so many hunters this cache will
be disabled during hunting season.
