Island cache on a small, uninhabited island in a branch of the Passaic River near the Lincoln Park / Wayne border.
You will need a boat or a frozen river to do this cache. In very dry seasons you might be able to reach it with hip waders but not likely.
This section of the Passaic River is flanked by Fayette Ave on the Wayne side (Fayette is the road you always see pictures of on the news shows under the heading 'Wayne Flooded') and Riveredge Road on the Lincoln Park side. Across from the Riveredge Rd & Rt 202 intersection there is a public boat launch. Also at this location is Wolfson's Market where you can get the best sliced london broil sandwich & macaroni salad you've ever had. I digress.
This can be approached a few ways. It is possible to put in at the boat launch and fight the current for your return trip. You can drop a car at the Two Bridges area and travel with the current the whole way. When we placed the cache we actually put in up in Pequannock and came downstream a few miles to Two Bridges - this made for a nice afternoon on the river with lunch at Wolfson's.
Once on the island the find is not difficult. The ammo can is chained in place to avoid being washed away in the flooding this area is prone to (a fate met by a similar cache placed on a different section of this river a few years back). Please do not remove the chain.
Enjoy the trip. This section of river is not known for this type of thing but there are some very interesting sights when viewed from the river. Please exercise common sense and boating safety, especially with young children.
"Now those memories come back to haunt me
they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
though I know the river is dry"
-Bruce Springsteen
