Geocache Description:

Down and along Magdale Valley

A large area of moorland drains into the bowl containing the town of Meltham. At this point a wide valley sets off Westward but turns and narrows towards its exit into the River Holme. This gives the valley a bulbous shape like a stomach, which reputedly is responsible for its name, Magen being the Saxon word for stomach. The valley around the narrow section is heavily wooded and quite beautiful (we think) with several old quarries making use of the steep slopes.
A portion of the original water is now caught above Meltham and diverted into Blackmoorfoot reservoir.

This cache along with Magdale View are twin caches, the two providing a circular walk of about 2.5 miles on local roads and on woodland paths. The caches are located around the narrowest section of the valley. Each cache has two micros connected to it with the Northings or Westings required for the final cache contained on the cache note. Each micro is next to a road, but the actual caches require some woodland walking. The roads do get a fair bit of local traffic, so kids should be kept close, but are popular with walkers and pram pushers (ourselves included).

There is parking in Honley village or limited parking on route, please park sensibly taking into account brows of hills. Two possible en-route locations are along the road at around N53 36.389 W001 47.846 and on Old Moll Road at around N53 36.362 W001 48.102

Both caches are 1 litre clip-top containers initially containing “treasure” selected by our five-year old.

These are the first caches we have placed ourselves and we have been quite kind in the hints (we think) especially as tree cover can limit accuracy. Any comments or advice will be welcomed.
