This cache has been archived.

tractor andy: Well a sad day today as Essex County Council have asked me to give up my cache here to make way for a new series they have planned for this location. Some history here as this cache goes back to 2007 and was placed by LightningFlash and adopted by me in 2016. My thanks to all the 400 cacher's for their finds over the years.

Geocache Description:

Martello Tower Jaywick

Named after a circular stone tower built in Corsica, the purpose of the towers was to protect, by heavy gun fire, the vulnerable coasts of south east England against invasion during the Napoleonic wars, they were built between 1805 and 1812.

The towers were round, built mainly of brick to a height of about 10m above ground level, rendered externally with lines cut to simulate ashlar stonework, having two floors, the lower being for storage and the upper for quarters, with the roof being used to mount a heavy gun and surrounded by a parapet about 1.80 thick and high, with the top sloping down to the outer edge.

This Napoleonic Tower now features a gallery space where the photographer John Kippin has produced a site-specific photographic installation. There is also a first floor multi-media space with floor to ceiling curved projection screen for immersive 3D video projections and Wi-Fi connections, providing a venue for a range of interesting, innovative and enjoyable projects. The roof has a pupose built veiwing area where you can watch the ships, jetski's etc go past.

Currently there is a large display of photographs showing how the local area of Jaywick has changed over the years.

The tower is open to visitors (free admission) as follows:
Monday - Sunday during July & August
Weekends between April and October
10am - 1pm 2pm - 5.30pm.

Traveling by car
Take A12 to Colchester, take A120 signposted Clacton, take A133 signposted Clacton. In Clacton take local roads to Jaywick. In Jaywick carry on through small town following coastal wall towards Martello Beach holiday Park. Take left turn by the sea wall, before you get to the Holiday Park.

A car park is available for visitors outside the tower which includes disabled parking.

This cache is located outside of the tower and can therefore be found regardless of whether the tower is open or closed!

Congratulation to Bazil 600 for their FTF on this cache!
