Geocache Description:

ROUTE 66 - AMERICA'S MAIN STREET!

Historic Route 66 originally started as a trail used by native Americans. Around the time of the Civil War it became a well used stage line. By the mid 1920's with the number of motorists and private road clubs growing, it was decided that a National Highway System should be created.

In 1926 the number "66" was chosen for the nearly 2400 miles of different sections of road spanning from Chicago to Los Angeles. During the coming years "America's Mainstreet" would be improved with new paving and significant road improvements that were finally completed in 1937. It was a grand road that offered people the opportunity to "head out west and see their country." However, by the mid 1950's it became apparent that "old Route 66" could no longer handle the ever increasing volume of traffic. The Interstate System of "super highways" became a reality and slowly but surely began bypassing pieces of Route 66 until it's demise in 1984. Luckily today you can still find remnants of "The Mother Road" in all of the eight states that it travelled.

Are you looking for a quick stop and drop for all of your Travel Bugs? Or maybe you're heading out of town and want to scoop up a few for your trip? This "TB Hotel" is on one of those remnants just down the road from three of its larger cousins and a tad east of Rt. 83. It's not far from the major crossroads of I-55 and I-294. Depending upon the time of day - only a few minutes from Midway Airport too.
