Although the bridge may seem small and insignificant, the legend of the White Lady is well-known amongst the local people of Guam. Legend has it that in the late 1600's, a Spanish officer and his Chamorro bride lived as newlyweds in a quiet village in Maina.
Soon after their honeymoon, the husband became cruel and abusive. Every night he demanded fresh mountain stream water with his food and sent his wife to the small creek in the valley below to fetch his water. She soon came to enjoy her lonely walks away from her husband. Her favorite time was during the full moon when the moon's reflection shimmered across the surface of the moving creek like dancing stars, with the gentle wind whistling through the jungle foliage.
On the night of their first wedding anniversary, it was stormy and raining. The husband sent his wife out into the cold and wet on this blackest of nights. With no full moon to guide her way and the wind screaming around her, she could not see that the small, trickling stream had transformed into a raging flood. As she neared the river's edge, the muddy embankment suddenly gave way, causing her to slip into the turbulent water. Her cries for help came unheeded as she succumbed to the dark depths of the swirling river.
Today, it is said that if you drive over the Maina bridge during a new moon and look into the blackness of night, you can see the White Lady, especially when a dangerous storm is approaching over the horizon. Her hair is silver like the moon; her eyes are sad and red. She will be standing at the river's edge wearing a long white flowing dress similar to a bridal gown. If you expect to catch a glimpse of her, you must visit this bridge between dusk and darkness as she will only appear one hour after sundown and suddenly disappear when the moon rises. If the White Lady touches you, she leaves a red spot on your body where the contact is made.
To find this cache, drive to the bridge and park anywhere along the side of the road. This park-and-grab cache is a camo'd pill bottle, you do not have to climb down to the river, jump off the bridge, or go into the foliage to retrieve it. The adventurous will want to go between dusk and darkness, the rest of us will want to find this during the day! Good haunting!
