Small container hidden in Langdon Park near what may be the remains of a local Supper Club destroyed by a seiche in 1954. THIS IS A NEW HIDE – SEEKER’S WHO FOUND CBMB 422 MAY FIND AND LOG THIS NEW CACHE!
The ‘Could Be, Might Be’ series hopes to entertain and, perhaps, enlighten you. The locales you’ll visit could be historically, geographically or environmentally significant – or not. After hunting the cache – you decide!
Lake Michigan experiences numerous seiches each year. A seiche is a ‘tidal wave’ of meteorological origin - such as wind and/or atmospheric pressure changes over a body of water (as opposed to a tsunami which is caused by a geological disturbance, like an earthquake). Scientists liken a seiche to sloshing water in a bath tub – pressing down on one side results in the propagation of a wave. These waves are usually barely noticeable but there have been a few memorable Lake Michigan seiches – some with reported wave heights in excess of 5-7 feet. As a kid in Chicago, I vividly remember having to “clear the beach area” when conditions existed which favored the formation of a seiche – usually after a brief intense storm.
The cache will bring you to an area of Wilmette which was previously unincorporated and known as “No-Man’s Land”. Supper clubs and some shady establishments crowded the shoreline here. With no municipal oversight or building codes many structures were poorly built and often dangerous. The “Sunset Supper Club” overlooked the Lake and was famous for filling its large veranda (which overhung the shoreline) for drinks at sunset. At approximately midnight on September 27th, 1954, a category 3 seiche (7-15 foot wave height) slammed into the shore with the Sunset Supper Club suffering the greatest damage – tumbling into the Lake forever. The overall damage to the shoreline here was so great that it was unsuitable for rebuilding until modern construction methods were commonplace, some years later.
You are looking for a 35mm film sized container near what possibly was the old entrance and parking lot of the Sunset Supper Club. Stay in the park!!!
