Geocache Description:

This railway was originally constructed, by the Great Northern Railway to transport iron ore to the iron and steel industry in Scunthorpe, via the Eastcoast main line at High Dyke junction.
The first ore via this route was sent in 1917 and was from the Stainby area, but eventually ore from other quarries in the area, including Colsterworth, Skillington and Sproxton, was dispatched via this route, and taken to blast furnaces at various locations.
The last load of iron ore to be transported over this route was from “Stainby Glebe Pit” (location of the first “Forgotten Industry” caches) on 26th July 1973.
Reception sidings were situated east of this cache for the Colsterworth quarries, and the track in both directions from these had fairly steep gradiants to negotiate.
When it closed to iron ore transportation, an attempt was made to take it over by private venture to use as a heritage railway, and with connections through Sewstern to the M&GN joint railway would give a possible route from High Dyke to Saxby Junction. However BR would not allow the High Dyke connection to the main line to be kept, and the whole venture fell through.
