Lasseter's Ghost Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Balayang: I am regretfully archiving this cache since unfortunately there has been no action to restore it, or any communication from the cache owner, way-finder, requesting additional time.

An ample opportunity has been provided for the Cache Owner to respond, but since this opportunity has been ignored, I can only conclude that the cache has been abandoned.

Caches archived under these circumstances are unable to be Unarchived, and this location is now available for the placement of a new cache, by somebody else.

Geocache Description:

Lasseter's Ghost is one of over 30 caches on the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world.

G'day Geocachers,
Lasseter's Ghost cache is located near the famous cave where the prospector Lewis Lasseter was stranded in 1931. The vast, often dry, river bed adjacent to the cave is the Hull River, a mighty torrent following rain. The Eucalyptus trees in the river bed are E. camaldulensis, river red gums. These are the most widespread eucalypt in the country and were an important source of food for local Aboriginal people.
The smooth white barked eucalypt trees that appear to be growing out of the rocks of the hill are Corymbia papuana (no longer Eucalyptus) - the famous Ghost Gum popular with outback artists such as Albert Namatjira. Perhaps one is the Ghost of Lasseter?

Activity: The storey of Lasseter's survival and death is legendary. Discouver more about his fateful journey prior to your visit. Check out the art of Albert Namatjira, the first indigenous artist to exhibit professionally using a western style. He was born near Ntaria (Hermannsburg Mission), 120k from Alice Springs and died in 1959.
