Lonely Sentinel is one of over 30 caches on the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world. Good luck finding them all.
G'day Geocachers,
Lonely Sentinel cache is located in the Gibson Desert bio-region of Australia and offers a wonderful opportunity to explore this stunning landscape. The majestic tree is a Desert Oak or Allocasuarina decaisneana if you are the scientific type. This lonely sentinel one of the last of this species if you are heading west and the first if heading east. Note the thick corky bark that protects the tree and also the large woody cones on the ground.
The red sand plains and dune fields are common here with mixed shrubs, including several species of acacia, hakea and grevillea - tough old favourites. The sand is reddish in colour due to a high iron content and the spinifex grasses love it.
Activity: Sand is great for observing animal tracks - what can you find? Look for rabbit, lizard, camel, bird and dog tracks. Share what you find in the log book.
