Geocache Description:

Mapungubwe National Park is situated in the NW of South Africa on the border between Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. On a map, the Park lies at the junction between the Shashi and Limpopo Rivers.

Sandstone formations, mopane woodlands and unique riverine forest and baobab trees form the scenic backdrop for a rich variety of animal life. Elephant, giraffe, leopard, white rhino, eland, gemsbok and numerous other species occur naturally in the area, while occasional sightings of hyena and lion also occur. Birding ios good – there are hides and over 400 occur, including kori bustard, tropical boubou and pel’s fishing owl.

Mapungubwe Archaeological site is an attraction (book tours in advance) as well the various scenic spots.

4 wheel drive recommended if you really want to explore!

Usual SAN Park entry fees apply.

This cache lies near the Poachers Corner (S22 10.989 E29 24.539), where in the old days poachers would cross over the border to Zimbabwe to do a quick spot of hunting. Shades of Crooks Corner, Kruger Park!

With care you can use a car for this drive. As you get near the site, you will see the forest alongside the border fence come up. Park at the edge of the forest (do not leave the tracks).

You will see around you (if you look carefully), the ruins from an old Army Camp.

When leaving your vehicle BE CAREFUL – this is a wildlife area where big game occurs. Keep children with you AT ALL TIMES.

After finding the cache take a drive along the border fence – as you pass Poachers Corner you may see cows from Zimbabwe in the Limpopo, as well as in the distance Zimbabweans fishing (!). Along the fence you may also see Parks staff doing fence maintenance – this is done to prevent the cattle carrying disease into the Park. Please report the fence at the Parks Entry Gate if it is broken and would allow cows access.

The cache is named after a bird sighted at the location.

The cache is a one litre container and contains the usual goodies, plus a logbook and 2 pencils. CAUTION – watch for scorpions!

When you have finished and replace the cache, please do so with care and replace as you found it - there are again a lot of (curious) baboons around who will drag it out if it is spotted and not secure.Small note on cache maintenance: I visit the area
every 4 to 6 months and will do maintenance then.
