Located in Pardon Gray Preserve, Tiverton, RI Uphill climb may be difficult for small children and older folks, return is a breeze. Beware of ticks and poison ivy.
Pardon Gray Preserve is an active farm and forest adjacent to Main Road in South Tiverton. Its 230 acres include miles of trails through a variety of natural habitats. Maps available at kiosk in parking area. The main trail starts down the hill, behind the hay field. Follow the arrows. For the history buff: Pardon Gray Preserve was purchased and preserved as permanent open space in 2000 by the Tiverton Land Trust. Originally a part of the Pocasset Purchase signed in 1676, it contains many colonial artifacts including the Gray Family Historical Cemetery, an old well house (restored as a visitors' kiosk) and original stonewalls. Many of the Gray family members became prominent: Robert Gray was first to sail around the world under the American flag; Samuel Gray became the first colonist to die in the American Revolution; David Gray sailed with the famous Capt. Cook; and Col. Pardon Gray was influential in the early days of the settlement of Tiverton and his homestead was the first on this property. From this site he provided food & supplies to the 1500 Revolutionary Army Troops camped at Fort Barton a few miles north. This area can also be reached from Weetamoe Woods.
