Geocache Description:

This cache is located at a Department of Fish and Wildlife Access point near the Skokomish River. Parking fee "required", or make a quick stop for the cache. Be sure and walk down to the river for the view.

As you drive through a portion of the Skokomish Indian Reservation on your way to the cache, keep in mind the fact that much of this land floods numerous times every year. The Skokomish River frequently overflows in the fall and spring, and is regularly featured on local news channels as salmon end up swimming across Highway 101. What is the cause of the flooding? Opinions vary, but some factors seem to be: years of clearcutting above the river leading to increased sediment in the channel, creation of the Lake Cushman dam on the North Fork of the river reducing flow in the main channel, and natural movement of the river over time. Years of political battles have raged between the city of Tacoma, the Skokomish Nation, environmentalists, farmers, and other impacted community members. Currently interest groups are working together to try and restore this area. For history buffs, many articles are available on the web. Whenever I visit this area, I am struck by both the beauty of the river and by the injustice that has been done to the native peoples living at the mouth of the river. It is my hope that this series of caches will raise awareness as to the issues and that eventually the lives of all the people living on the river will be improved through restoration efforts.
