Geocache Description:

A geocache in the newly expanded Watmough Bight Preserve on Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State.

During the summer of 2007 Lopez Island residents, the San Juan Preservation Trust, the San Juan County Land Bank, and concerned citizens beyond the islands raised the money to purchase the property on the south side of Watmough Bight, protecting it from a planned development and all future development. The expanded Watmough Bight Preserve is one of the largest in the San Juans and will now always be accessible to the public.

The Preserve keeps Watmough Bight in it’s pristine form, guards its significant archeological and historic nature, and expands the Area of Critical Concern Reserve.
The Northern Salish Native Americans have been using Watmough Bight and the surrounding area dating back 3000 years.

From the parking lot off of Watmough Head Road at the south end of Lopez Island, follow the trail to the beach, and just before crossing onto the beach there is a well maintained trail on the right. The hike is 0.4 mile long with an elevation gain of about 120 feet. The cache is hidden a few feet off of a side trail, no bushwhacking is necessary.

There is a loop trail back to the parking lot along the northern side of the wetlands. Cross the beach to the north side to continue on the loop trail.
