Ruins of the Roman fortification between the road 12 and Danube.

The Roman Empire was the largest and longest existing empire in the history of the world. Its frontier was extended as far as the Danube during the reign of Augustus. The Pannonian frontier's sector now located in Hungary. This sector was established along the Danube. The major legionary bases, many watchtowers and forts was on the right bank of the Danube. Some fortifications were built on the left bank in the north-western portions of Empire, but only the two bridgehead are know in Transdanubia. This is one, situated about 1,5 km from Verôce, between the road 12 and the river. It was built by the order of emperor Valentinianus I. similar to the other bridgehead at Dunaszekcsô. This small fortifications commonly referred to as Nógrádverôce-type fortification. The concept of defense by Valentinianus consisted in pushing forward the Roman frontier defense from the Danube towards the Barbaricum. The fulfilment of the concept several Roman military establishments were built up on the left bank of the Danube and the ditch system called „Csörsz” (located in the Great Hungarian Plain, was built formerly by Sarmatians) was pushed forward. These works led to a war between the Romans and the Quads in A.D. 374-375 because of a not prudent diplomatic preparation.

Reconstructed Roman watchtower
along the Limes Germanicus.

A verôcei ôrtornyot hajdan pontonhíd kötötte össze a szemközti, szentendrei-szigeti ôrtoronnyal. A két szomszédos telek vízmû védterület, ahová belépni tilos!
