Top Secret is the first cache I've ever hidden. The story line below is the second installment of my Rooni-"Puppet Master" series. Oddly enough, there is a major clue in "Top Secret", that could lead to the finale of the "Puppet Master" series of caches. Spies to learn, Smileys to earn! Have fun!
“Top Secret”
The file folder was sitting on the table in the debriefing room. Stamped in too much red ink, almost resembling a slide from the Vorsacht test, I was intrigued, but ignored it. After a few moments, the “Puppet Master” entered the room, took a seat opposite of me, and steepled his fingers together in front of his face.
“We have a problem.”
“What is it?”
“The contents of this folder don’t jive” he said, tapping the item in question. “We have carefully analyzed it, but it makes no sense.”
“Where is it from?”
“Never mind where it’s from, what we want to know is why it’s coded as “Top Secret”, while the information is less than secret.”
“Mind if I take a look?
“Please do.”
The folder was pretty thin, containing a map, an overhead satellite shot of the mapped area, and very brief description of the terrain, landscape, and references to declassified missions; some of those missions were so declassified, that they had become episodes on recent television programs.
“Can you make anything out of it?”
“Not off hand… can I sit with this a while, and look it over?”
“Sure… How’d the last trip go?”
“It was a snap. I pitched, the client bought.”
“Smooth as silk, eh?”
“At times it felt like corduroy, but the end justified the means, in this case.”
“So there was a little trouble then?”
“Just Junior Varsity stuff… a local became quite the asset.”
“A local?”
“Mm hmm…” I replied, as I began to carefully analyze the file folder and it’s contents.
The “Puppet Master” knew well enough to let this one hang for a while…
“What ever is so Top Secret about this is escaping me right now, but I have committed the information to memory, so I’ll just let it roll around in my subconscious for a while… maybe it will jump out at me.”
Later it occurred to me, that the secret that was “Top Secret”, was misinformation that had been interpreted wrongly… the roots of a disinformation campaign, designed to expose the covert operatives at their most vulnerable.
The next day, I looked for the “Puppet Master”, but to no avail. Awaiting me in the briefing room was a new mission. It was not assigned by the “Puppet Master”.
