Zebra Watch is one of over 30 cache sites along the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world.
Zebra Watch cache is located near the Mummine well and windmill. This is Ngaanyatjarra land, an extensive area of traditional Aboriginal occupation. Human populations in the harsh deserts of central Australia have always been sparse but Aboriginal people have lived here for at least 10,000 years.
Water soaks, wells and rockholes were critical to survival.
This section of Outback Way was built in 1967 following a line of traditional water holes and soakages. This cache site is located on the margin between two great desert bioregions - the Gibson Desert to the north and Great Victoria Desert to the south. The Mummine area is characterised by a gently undulating sandy landform with sparse vegetation common to savannah landscapes.
Activity: Mummine mill supplies a surface pond that attracts a great many animals - watch for camels, emus, dingos and many species of birds.
Sit quietly and watch the animals come to the water. Remember your binoculars. There will be zebra - the bird kind, not the mammal variety.
