Geocache Description:

Een korte tocht door een museumachtig dorpje. A short trip in a museum like little village.

Zo vlakbij de stad Groningen ligt Thesinge. Opmerkelijk rustig, bijna verscholen, in het Groninger platteland. Geen drukke wegen of doorgaand verkeer zijn er, wel smalle landweggetjes, kano-vaarwater en landerijen. The village Thesinge is located close to the town Groningen. Still it is remarkably quiet in the country side. No busy roads or through traffic are found here, but narrow country roads, canoe water and farm lands.
De dorpskern is een wandeling waard, met de oude Kloosterkerk en korenmolen Germania als blikvangers. De molen is elke zondagmiddag geopend. Het terrein achter de molen is een archeologisch monument: in de grond bevinden zich nog restanten van het klooster. Volledig in oude staat hersteld is de smederij op 'Smidshouk', op afspraak te bezichtigen. It is worthwile to walk through the old center of the village. The old monastery church and the grain mill Germania are the main attractions. Every sunday afternoon the mill is open for visitors. Behind the mill is an archeological monument: remnants of the old monastery are still present in the ground. The forge at 'Smidshouk' (forge corner) is restored in it original state and can be visited on request.
Thesinge heeft een kleurrijk verleden, met als feitelijk beginpunt de kloosters die er in de 12e eeuw werden gesticht. Eén daarvan was het Benedictijner dubbelklooster (een klooster met een mannen- en een vrouwenafdeling) Germania. Het kloosterterrein lag op een verhoging. Eromheen groeide een eerste nederzetting. Thesinge has a colorfull history, which starts with the monastries which were founded in the 12th century. One of them was the double monastery Germania following Saint Benedict's Rule (with a male and a male department). The monastery was located on an elevation. Around it grew the first settlement.
Hoge bomen, een fraai oud kerkhof en het water bepalen de sfeer om de kloosterkerk. Het lijkt alsof de kerk is gebouwd op een terp, maar dit is slechts schijn: de veengrond onder de kerk is nog aanwezig, rondom de kerk is die afgegraven. De kruin van Thesinge's dorpskern ligt beneden N.A.P. Thesinger veen had ten tijde van de afgravingen een zeer goede naam in de regio, vanwege de kwaliteit. High trees, a beautifull churchyard and the water determine the atmosphere around the monastery church. It seems as if the church was built on an elevation, but the reverse is true: the peat under the building is still present, but further from the church it has been digged away. The center of the village lays below sea level. The peat of Thesinge was famous because of its quality.
Het huidige kerkgebouw is maar een schamel overblijfsel van wat eens een imposant gebouw moet zijn geweest. Een plattegrond, aanwezig in de kerk, laat de contouren zien van een grote kruiskerk. Het klooster had als patroonheilige St. Felicitas, een martelares uit de vroeg-christelijke tijd. The present church building is a small remnant of what must have been an impressive building. A map, present in the church, shows the contours of a big cross church. The patroness of the monastery was St. Felicitas, a martyr from the early christian time.
Het gebouwtje achter de kerk is een lijkenhuisje, onlangs gerestaureerd. Het was oorspronkelijk bedoeld om er mensen die gestorven waren aan een besmettelijke ziekte in op te baren. Ook kwam veelvuldig schijndood voor. Deze mensen werden er eerst neergelegd, tot men er zeker van was dat zij echt waren overleden. The small, recently restored building, behind the church is a corpse house. Originally it was meant to lay out people who died because of an infectious disease. In addition apparent death occurred frequently. These people were put here for some time until it was sure that they died.
Er worden tegenwoordig geen regelmatige diensten meer gehouden in de kerk. Het wordt nog wel vaak gebruikt voor bruiloften. Nowadays the church is no longer used for regular services. It is still used often for wedding ceremonies.
Het interieur van de kerk is een bezichtiging waard, niet alleen vanwege oude fresco's, maar ook vanwege het meubilair en de resultaten van recente opgravingen. De sleutels zijn vlakbij te verkrijgen. It is worthwhile to visit the church. There are some frescos, old furniture and results of archeologic unearthing. The keys are available nearby.
Het huidige dorp is veel later, eind 16e eeuw, rond de kloosterkerk op kloostergrond ontstaan. The present village orignates from a later date, the end of the 16th century.
Hoe is de cache te vinden
Finding the cache
De hierboven gegeven coördinaten zijn van het voormalige haventje. In deze omgeving is meestal wel parkeergelegenheid. In vroeger tijd toen de meeste goederen per boot werden aan- en afgevoerd had bijna iedere plaats wel een haventje. The coordinates shown above are of a former little harbour. Usually there is place nearby to park a car. In earlier days most goods were transported by boat. Therefore, almost every place had some kind of harbour.
De volgende vier waypoints geven een kleine wandeling door het oude deel van het dorp. De rondwandeling eindigt weer bij het haventje. Onderweg zijn allerlei gebouwen te zien die vroeger een (meestal andere) bestemming hadden. Noteer de huisnummers van sommige van deze gebouwen. Ze staan hieronder in de volgorde waarop ze bij deze wandeling gezien worden. Ze zijn nodig om de coördinaten van de cache te bepalen. The next four waypoints are used for a walk through the old part of the village. The walk ends again near the harbour. During this walk you will see some buildings which in earlier days had a (mostly different) destination. Write down the house numbers of some of these buildings. During the walk you will see them in the order as written below. They are needed to calculate the coordinates of the cache.

Weer terug op de parkeerplaats is daar vlak in de buurt ook de kloosterkerk te zien. Het deel dat er nu nog staat is alleen het achterste deel van de vroegere kloosterkerk. De ingang van de kerk van het klooster Germania was vroeger bijna op de plaats waar nu de parkeerplaats is. On your way back to the parking place, you passed a church. The church as it is now is only the hindmost part of the original building. The entrance of the church of the monastery Germania was near to where now is the parking place.

Bij het neerleggen van de cache bevatte deze (naaste de verplichte zaken als logboek en pen) een haak met klok en kompas, een Travel Bug, een blikken doosje met en een theelepeltje. When the cache was placed it contained (apart from the required things like a log book and a pen) a hook with clock and compas, a Travel Bug, a metal box and a tea spoon.
