In 1914 you could take the train on the Washington & Old Dominion railroad from Washington to Bluemont for $1. Today you can start in Alexandria and hike or bike the trail all 45 miles of the rails turned to trails to end your journey in Purcellville. The tracks are long gone, but Purcellville's train station still occupies the place it has stood since 1904. It replaced a depot built about the time the railroad arrived in 1874. The W&OD is a wonderful way to see the Western Loudoun County scenery. Not far from the end of the trail in the historic town are quaint restaurants and shops run by local owners.
