Geocache Description:

Cascade Pistache

width=

Welcome to Rodrigues!

If you like extreme terrain, gorges and rocks: keep on reading ... Would you like to enter this gorge through a steep slope, walk in the gorge, and then find your own path among thick bushes and (after rain) slippery rocks to the massive range seen on the photo above? Then follow us to the cache!

Stage 1: S 19° 43.365 E 063° 22.296
Here is the easiest entry to the gorge. Park your car here. Several stairs lead you halfway down to a small basin where women (used to?) wash their clothes. Step further down until you reach the bottom of the gorge at stage 2.

Stage 2: S 19° 43.382 E 063° 22.231
You have reached the bottom of the gorge. Probably there is no water but who knows?

Go ahead until you reach stage 3. No problems up to there. Don't be surprised if you meet locals.

Stage 3: S 19° 43.252 E 063° 21.876
The Indian Ocean is not far in front of you - maybe you can smell it but you cannot see it due to the trees around you. Now, turn right towards the massive range, and this is where the difficult part begins. The range is only about 60 meters away (it looks further!), and you will see a dark rectangular structure as part of the rocks. To us it almost looked like a big black door. Use it as your landmark - it is stage 4 - and proceed up there, somehow!

Stage 4: S 19° 43.225 E 063° 21.897
You have reached what we have called "the door" and you are overlooking the gorge. You are close to the cache: about 26 meters to go. Be careful, don't slip, and proceed to the cache at stage 5 (at the same altitude).

Stage 5: S 19° 43.210 E 063° 21.893
You have reached the location of the cache.

To return to your car, you may follow the same way back. This is the shortest and easiest way. Alternatively, you can proceed to the sea and return in a big round. If you come here with Joachim (see below) he will definitely guide you this way. You may then want to sit down, overlook the Indian Ocean, and ask yourself why you want to leave.

Good luck!

We know, you have come a long way to Rodrigues. To help you find the cache, we have added photos showing characteristic landmarks. If you would like to have more help (there are no "guides" at the cascade) or just company, we recommend you to contact our friend Joachim. He lives only a few hundred meters from Cascade Pistache and knows the exact location of the cache. He speaks Creole and French.
