National Museum in San Jose, Costa Rica Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MikePettengill: After multiple attempts to find good locations for this geocache, it's been muggled many times, I'm just giving up on this one. Sorry gang! I know there aren't many in San Jose and I was hoping to resolve that, but each one I've placed has been muggled within a week, and multiple times. Just giving up. Sorry!

Geocache Description:

I'm an avid geocacher, and I've come to Costa Rica to attend language school for a year and found that this beautiful country was sorely lacking many geocaches. Well...I'm on a mission to change that. Once I leave next year, my friends who are coming for school will be maintaining the cache. A student will maintain the cache, and if at any time I'm unable to find someone to maintain it, I will deactivate the cache.

This location is in down-town San Jose, Costa Rica. There are so many places to visit, but this museum is a MUST see! Currently it's only $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for kids to get in.

The national museum or Museo Nacional is located in an old fort, which was marked by bullet holes during the 1948 Civil War. The archaeological room offers several Indian artifacts made of stone and clay, like pottery. The colonial room presents facts about the conquest and also some examples of religious art brought by the Spaniards. Another section of the Museum is dedicated to current exhibits. Many but not all of the exhibits are marked in Spanish and English. The artifacts cover a period of more than a thousand years, from plain and primitive figurines to the exquisite vases and also includes colonial furniture, printing press and a pretty central sitting area.

One of the neat things to see that we didn't know about before we got there was a beautiful butterfly garden inside the museum. Just follow the signs to the "hidden garden".

The nice thing about the museum is that it is located right next to one of the best places to get tourist souveniers in the area! It's an open market showing off mostly hand-made items. Also a MUSTS for your visit to San Jose. So you get two-for-one by visiting this cache. PLEASE make sure you hide with camo so as not to be muggled or removed by construction teams. Thanks!

Enjoy your time there and hope you have fun with the cache!
