A cache at the beautiful Bunya Mountains. The Bunya Mountains is the most western rainforest park in the south-east Queensland. Rising 900m above the surrounding plains the Bunya Mountains is known for its distinctive dome-shaped bunya pines.
Declared national park in 1908, 11 700ha have been set aside to preserve the largest remaining natural stand of bunya pines in Queensland and to provide habitats for the varied and colourful birdlife and other animals of the mountains.
According to geologists, the Bunya Mountains were formed about 30 million years ago and are thought to be a remnant of an old shield volcano. The dome-shaped topography comprises basaltic lava flows that have cooled and solidified. Over millions of years, the basalt rock has eroded and been broken down by weathering to form the deep red-brown and black earths of the Bunya Mountains today.
The cache is located near a lookout parking spot. Park off the road on a side track. Enjoy the views to the west over the Darling Downs. The cache is a PVC tube with a screw cap filled with the usual goodies. FTF will have a good choice.
Enjoy the “MAGIC” of the Bunyas as we do.
