Ahearn Lookout Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

GammaPiSigma: Walked out to do some night photography of the Nattai River valley from the great lookouts along the Ahearn Track. So I decided while I was out in the area I would remove this cache as it is in contravention of NPWS policy.

Thanks to all the finders, we hope you enjoyed the opportunity to go to a great spot in one of my favourite bushwalking areas.

Regards,
GammaPiSigma.

Geocache Description:

Well it’s time for GammaPiSigma to place a real bush cache. Located along the Nattai River is the Nattai Wilderness. A rugged area protected by its’ status as part of the upper Warragamba Dam catchment. Most walks into this area involve some serious descents/ascents.

Up until a couple of years ago Ahearn Lookout could only accessed by a lengthy and challenging cross-country route which was only known by a few. But someone decided that a run out to the lookout with a Bobcat would make it easier and a new walking track was born. This caused no end of fuss and the authorities were not impressed. But for you and me it now means a much easier trip to the lookout. There are other lookouts in this area but in my opinion Ahearn is by far the best, providing sweeping views along the Nattai River valley it is well worth the trip.

Warnings:
The return trip is approx 12kms over undulating country; take plenty of water, food, and safety equipment.
The weather can change rapidly so be prepared for it.
The cliffs at the lookout are around the 100metre mark. If you fall off the chances of survival are low to none and rescue/recovery will not occur quickly.
The Hill Top (8929-2-N) topographic map covers this area and you should take a copy with you and know how to use it.
