Geocache Description:


Summers are meant for alpine hikes. During the winters, you can hike the lowlands to your heart’s content but summers…the mountains. I was getting ready for a hike with my hiking pal Smylegirl and as I usually do, checked the website for a cache at our destination. I was shocked. There was none. Time to fix that.

Hannegan Pass is one of the many great hikes in the Mt. Baker area. The road into the trailhead is easily doable in a passenger car although at times there maybe a little winter damage. When you get to the parking lot, do not be surprised to see what may seem like a lot of cars; the Hannegan Pass trail is the starting point for many other multi-day hikes! Most of the cars belong to people who are out there somewhere and you won’t see them on the trail. As with all trailheads in the Mt. Baker area, you will need a parking pass to park.

The Hannegan Pass trail itself is nicely maintained. Round trip is 8.6 miles to the pass but I highly recommend going the extra mile to Hannegan Peak, accessed from the pass. The elevation gain in the 4.3 miles in is approximately 2000 feet. There are creek crossings to replenish your water supply if you filter. There is also a designated campground near the pass.

The cache is found at the pass itself within a stones throw from where you pop up out of the woods. It is placed in an area that should keep it safe from the winter’s snow.
