This cache is located at Denning’s Point State Park along the Hudson River in Beacon, NY. This area is part of the Hudson Highlands Park and is a beautiful area. This area is terrific for wildlife, especially birds and waterfowl of all kinds. When placing it I saw swans, blue heron, and more species of ducks than I knew. The parking is a little way from the trailhead, but it’s an easy, relatively flat walk. Park by the Beacon Water Treatment Plant at the end of Denning’s Avenue at the coordinates given. Now, this may not seem like a nice place to start a nature hike, but it will once you walk a short distance. Use your better judgement when parking and don’t block any of the roads or gates and don’t go through the gate even though it may be open. There is construction of the Beacon Institute for the study of rivers and estuaries in the process, so watch for trucks if the gate’s open. There’s plenty of room to park. From the parking you’ll walk along an old road and cross a bridge over the train tracks. This is where you’ll find the trailhead. From here you’ll take a left and pass by a large, abandoned building. Once past the building turn right to spot the white trail markers. This trail creates a loop on Denning’s Point so you can decide which way to go.
This cache is a cammo'd 50 cal. ammo can along the eastern edge of the point facing an inlet on the Hudson River with a view of Mount Beacon and the Hudson Highlands. If you look really close, maybe you can see one of the many caches up on those mountains...or maybe not. This cache is located in some neat ruins, but you don’t have to do damage to them to find it. You’ll find an interesting item at the “door” to the ruins where I got the name for the cache. Take a look out of the “windows” for a natural duck blind for photography. Look for DP’s View of Bannerman’s and Denning’s Point caches along the loop. All caches are a short distance from the trail and very close to small, unmarked but well traveled, side trails. Total distance from the parking doing the entire loop and back is about 2.5 miles.
NOTE: Denning’s Point is closed to the public from December 1st - March 31st because of efforts to restore the Bald Eagle in the Hudson Valley. During this time, I will temporarily disable the caches here and will pull them so that there is no temptation to disrupt this habitat.
