Geocache Description:

Cache is a log only container (please bring pen) located near the Tinemaha Wildlife Viewpoint on Highway 395.

The Tinemaha Wildlife Viewpoint site overlooks an area frequented by a herd of Tule Elk in the Owens Valley. Originally this elk was not found in the Owens Valley, its range being confined to the Central Valley of California and the adjacent foothills.

In 1933 and 1934 a total of 55 elk were introduced from the Buttonwillow (see Tule Elk State Reserve) and Yosemite herds. That the species was able to adapt successfully to this new habitat is evidenced in the fact that there are now approximately 300 animals despite several hunts which have netted around 450 individuals. There are about six herds with between 20 and 60 animals in each. As the elk are both browsers and grazers, they compete with both deer and cattle for food, much to the displeasure of the cattlemen.
