Out on "Old 395", take a little detour off the main highway and see the old Paradise Lodge. It was a virtual piece of history here. This resort was in continous operation since 1916. Situated 16 miles north of Bishop, it used to stand alone, (literally). There were no other businesses or homes around it. Many homes nearby. Now it appears that it will become someone's home and all the cabins will be replaced by condos.
What's left of this lodge sits on a bend of Lower Rock Creek.
There were neat cabins upstream and across the road downstream. You could fish while on the front porch of some of the cabins. Never ate there, we hear it had quite a reputation for fine food.
Ah, but progress and $$$ or lack of, have taken their toll. Many will miss it. It is still a good starting/ending point for some great mountain biking and you can still dabble a rod on the creek side of the road.
