Geocache Description:

The title "Mort" was chosen, as the location for this cache will take you to a well known spot in Pretoria also known as the "Spookhuis" (Haunted House). The coordinates listed are not the final coordinates to the cache. We suggest, however, that you park at this location. We suggest you visit this cache at night as the lighting done on the Haunted House is quite impressive. The location of the cache provides a good view of the "Spookhuis" in case you would like to take a photograph.

Please note: The "Spookhuis" is owned by Armscor and therefore is located on private property. In order to find the cache, you DO NOT need to enter the grounds. Please refrain from doing so, to minimize personal risk. DO NOT scale/cut the fence or try to bribe the gaurds to enter the premises.

The title of this cache is borrowed from the fourth novel of one of our Favourite writers, Mr. Terry Pratchett. This is the first in a series of caches with a Discworld (DW) theme.

The "Spookhuis" is actually the original farm residence of the family Erasmus, after whom the suburb Erasmuskloof was named. The house derived its reputation from the fact that it was unoccupied for a while, and homeless travellers would take up temporary residence from time to time. People passing by would see the ghostly lights of the fires lit within, and assume the house was haunted. Furthermore, the house features in the classic Afrikaans movie "Hier's Ons Weer!" starring Al Debbo and Frederik Burgers. In this movie, the house is also referred to as "die Spookhuis" a couple of times. "Mort" keeps in line with this theme of lost, and in some cases misguided, souls.

The Novel centres around a teenager named Mort, whose personality and temperament makes him unsuited to the family farming business. Mort’s father, Lezek, is under the impression that Mort thinks too much and that this prevents him from achieving anything practical. Lezek decides to make Mort’s thinking problem someone else’s, by taking him to a hiring fair in the hope that someone would sign him up as an apprentice.

In order to find the final coordinates of the cache, you will need the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the name of the person who arrives just before the stroke of midnight, to offer Mort an apprenticeship?

2. State the name of the white horse belonging to the person mentioned in Q1.

3. Mort's father, Lezek, is under the impression that his son is offered an apprenticeship in a very similar but completely different occupation. What is the occupation Lezek thinks his son is being trained in?

4. What is the Nickname of the person in Q1, according to the Three Pedestrians of the Apocalypse?

5. Name the princess saved by Mort (by mistake!).

6. To what type of “competition” does Mort challenge the character in Q1?

7. Who does Mort marry in the end?
