West Lomond is the highest point in the Kingdom of Fife and the highest peak in the Lomond Hills. Its volcanic dolerite cone rises above an escarpment of carboniferous sandstone and limestone layers oooooo! The conspicuous cones of West Lomond, and its neighbour East Lomond, are visible for many miles around, which explains their name the 'Paps o Fife'.
West Lomond is USUALLY climbed from Craigmead car park (wimp route) on the Falkland-Leslie road, as this sits at a height of almost 300 metres. Another route leaves from the Bonnet Stane and climbs diagonally (or there is a follow the arrow path) up the steep north slopes of the escarpment to a gap in the cliffs, above which one gains the plateau a short distance from the summit cone. On this route there are more interesting features to the landscape, however the climb is (slighty) steeper and begins at a much lesser altitude than the Craigmead car park, the only way. It took me 44 mins from Bonnet Stane parking to the top, following the arrow, and at lot less on way down, so really its a cache and dash.
Ok! now you up there! can you see the either of the Forth Bridges and either of the Tay Bridges! Bino's help!
