This area was once the largest city in Clark County, and was also in strong consideration for the County seat. In the big logging boom there were 4 hotels, a hospital, and numerous salons. Some accounts say the population was close to 20,000 just before the 1929 fire that, in combination with the depression, drove the loggers and the rest of the towns people away.
The name of the town is a Native American term for "The Haunted Valley". The story goes that during the annual huckleberry picking and salmon fishing on the Lewis River two Native American Children vanished, so the name haunted valley
In recent years the population has grown and in the 2000 census the town once again had a population over 1000.
