Family Tree - Nick Drake Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A simple micro cache (35mm film type container, please bring a pen) placed on a Public Footpath just below the Church at Tanworth-in-Arden.
The cache can be reached from above or below, but to appreciate the cache name you should start from the Churchyard, parking around "The Green", which is a 5 minute walk from the cache on a stile-free path.
Nick Drake was a singer-songwriter who died tragically in 1974 at the family home in Tanworth-in-Arden.
Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Nick Drake's work has grown steadily in stature since his early death, to the extent that he is now widely considered to be one of the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.
June the 19th 2007, Nick's birthday, saw the release of a posthumous album including performances by his mother and sister called "Family Tree" after which the cache is named.
When you walk through the Churchyard and start to follow the path downhill there is an Oak to your right with a wooden sign. Just below is the family grave of the Drake family where the ashes of Nick, his Father and his Mother are interred. The headstone has the words "Now we rise and we are everywhere" on the reverse - these words are taken from the final song of his final album produced during his short lifetime.
Please retrieve/replace the cache with care - this can be a busy path.
Note: The Graveyard is also the final resting place of former Motorcycle Ace Mike Hailwood (and his daughter) who sadly died in a car accident on the A435 in March 1981.
Note added July 2023: This cache was placed at a time when GPSr accuracy was not as good as it is today. At my last visit I had a reading of 30' at GZ but the hint along with cachers instinct will tell you where to look.
