Dungoil is a prominent steep, craggy looking little hill that I’ve wandered about climbing many times as I’ve zoomed down Crow Road. Trouble was I couldn’t really see an easy way to get there because of the dense looking surrounding woods. So this time I just decided to go for it and I’m glad I did. Pick your parking spot along the B822 (didn’t realise it was still called Crow Road all the way around here) and just follow the arrow across the fields.
You’ll probably have a fun time crashing your way through the pines, there are a few distinct ways through the dense trees, and it’s a pretty steep final approach but on a clear day the views are out of this world. For a much shorter walk and better views this one is better value for money than Stronend Over Fintry (not that you shouldn’t go there as well of course!).
I came in from just south of east which seemed to be a good compromise of distance and height to climb. You could come in from further down which would start you off 60m lower but give you a shorter sharper climb. You’ll have less bushwhacking to do and you’ll have to go around a bit as it’s unlikely you’ll want to go straight up the craggy bit! You could come in along the Clachie Burn or even further south for a longer gentler walk but you’ll probably have more work getting through the trees. You decide.
I can’t believe I didn’t have my camera with me; I’m looking forward to seeing other people’s pictures.
Two TB’s to entice FTFerds!
