They Served #2 Mystery Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cemetery and the grass pathway to it are mowed and just a little uneven. It may feel like you are walking over someone's side yard but it is a public path to the cemetery. This should be easy for kids but not likely suitable for most strollers. Just a little walking around is needed. Opposite the pathway is a 'small house' containing 4 mailboxes. Near these there is limited parking. Please do not block mail deliveries by parking too close to the boxes.
This old grave site is on the east slope of Elliot Hill. It is the burial site of people who were mostly farmers with some early mill workers and a few servants of the richer families. A number of the men had served in our American Revolution. I noticed markers for two members of the Elliot family line but there could be more.
On the way in, take note of when the cemetery was dedicated from the sign on the gate: 17AA.
At the first coordinates find out how many years Solomon Parsons suffered from the wounds he received at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778. 17 years ago that information was easy to read from the tall marble headstone, in that time the letters have really worn. Luckily, there now is a new flat, in ground marker with his year of death on it. With much snow, use an internet search on his name and the gravestone in front of you should come up. Subtract the year of the battle, 1778, from the year of his death to get BB.
Now find the date of the last burial in the cemetery 19CC.
To the REFERENCE COORDINATES given below: Add AA to the North coordinates. Add BB+CC to the West coordinates and you have the coordinates of the cache, or “treasure chest” in kids’ parlance. The container is a lock and lock, cameo covered 2X8X6 inch container. Small to medium travel bugs will fit. Do not use the published coordinates as they are for parking.
