Geocache Description:

Another trademark RSDB nanocache (sorry) placed on the brand new foot/cycle bridge spanning the central motorway and metro line.

This magnificent addition to Tyneside’s famous bridges is Northumbria University’s brand new foot and cycle bridge which will link its City Centre Campus with its new state-of-the art Campus East, due to open in September.
Northumbria University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kel Fidler, says: “The North East has a long proud history for engineering excellence and is renowned throughout the world for its magnificent bridges. We are delighted to be making a significant contribution to that reputation with the addition of this superb foot and cycle bridge, which will be a real asset to the people of Newcastle, as well as providing a vital link between our two city centre campus sites.”

The bridge, which cost over £4 million, has been supported by a generous £½ million grant from the Northern Rock Foundation. It has been designed by WSP Structural Engineers and Atkins Architects.

Volker Stevin Ltd, who constructed the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, are the University’s main contractors for the bridge and sub-contractors Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd – who were involved in the construction of the Tyne Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge – were responsible for the bridge fabrication at their Darlington factory.

The bridge is six metres wide and spans 95 metres across Newcastle’s Central Motorway and the Metro railway line.

Professor Kel Fidler says: “The bridge forms an important part of the total campus development, which at £136 million, is the University’s largest ever investment programme, making a major contribution to the City’s growth and regeneration.’’

Newcastle Business School, the School of Law and the School of Design will move from existing buildings on the City Campus site to the new City Campus East and around 9,000 students will begin their studies there in September this year.
