Geocache Description:

Yockanookany River - "Catfish Land"

The Yockanookany River’s translated native american name means “Catfish Land”. It is a river, about 65 miles long, located in central Mississippi and is a tributary of the Pearl River, which flows to the Gulf of Mexico. The Yockanookany begins in Choctaw County, Mississippi in the vicinity of the town of Ackerman and flows generally southwestwardly through Choctaw, Attala and Leake Counties, past the towns of Ackerman, Weir, McCool, Ethel and Kosciusko. It flows into the Pearl River in southwestern Leake County. Much of the Yockanookany's upper course through Choctaw and Attala Counties has been straightened and channelized, but in some areas the river continues to flow in the river's old natural channel. Downstream of Kosciusko, the river is paralleled by the Natchez Trace Parkway. The cache is loacted in the Yockanookany Wildlife Management Area. The WMA's 2,379 areas are located Southwest of MS Highway 12 between McCool, MS and Ethel, MS in Attala County. You are looking for a green ammo box. IMPORTANT NOTE - THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE, FISHERIES, AND PARKS NOW REQUIRES A WMA USER'S PERMIT: ALL PERSONS USING THIS WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, EXCEPT THOSE EXEMPT FROM PURCHASING AN ANNUAL HUNTING OR FISHING LICENSE, MUST CARRY ON THEIR PERSON AN ANNUAL STATEWIDE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA USER PERMIT. THIS PERMIT IS REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO THE DAILY VISITOR USE PERMIT AND ANY REQUIRED LICENSE. A YEARLY (JUNE - JUNE) PERMIT WILL COST YOU ABOUT 17 DOLLARS. THEY CAN BE PURCHASED ANYWHERE YOU BUY HUNTING LICENSES OR ONLINE. ATV's are recommended and welcomed in the Yockanookany WMA. This is a great location to bring your ATV and explore the river for miles. It is also a beautiful location for a hike. I would not recommend caching the WMA at night or during deer hunting season. Here are the recommended coordinates for the parking area: N33*09.995 W089*25.543
