These falls have long been considered a local "secret", but I
figured that once the Forest Service publicized their new trail to
the falls in the newspaper, placing a cache here was fair
game.
A hike of approximately .65 miles brings you to the picturesque
falls (60 ft +/-), which empty into a shallow pool that is popular
for swimming and sunning.
To reach the parking coords, from Horse Cove Rd turn south onto
Walkingstick Rd; at 2.9 miles, turn right and continue .2 miles.
The trailhead (the "Big Shoals Trail") will be on your left; go
around the gate, walk down the old road, and at approximately .14
miles the trail turns left into the woods. When you get to a small
clearing within 200 feet of the cache, you'll hear the falls and
see the river down below on the right side; look for a small,
steep, switch-backing trail that leads down to the river - you
won't want to bushwhack here.
You are looking for a medium-sized lock-n-lock container.
Enjoy!
