Robert Johnson, 1911-1938, was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. He died just 27 years later on August 16, 1938 in Greenwood, Mississippi. Legend says that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads in return for his guitar playing talent. This story was backed up by local bluesmen, including Son House - who said that he was such a horrible guitar player before he returned from a brief vacation that there was no other way for him to have gained the skill. Johnson's recording career was brief - a few recording sessions in Texas gave us the 29 known songs, including such blues legends as "Cross Roads Blues", "I beleive I'll Dust My Broom", and "Sweet Home Chicago". His songs have been recorded by many blues and rock artists - including Eric Clapton (Cross Roads Blues).
Johnson was supposedly poisoned by the husband of a jealous woman at the Three Forks jukejoint near Greenwood, MS. He is said to have died on the floor, crawling on all fours and barking like a dog - other stories say he was taken to nearby Greenwood and died 3 days later. Controversy followed Johnson to the grave, as there are 3 reported gravesites for Robert Johnson. The 3 reported gavesites are: Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church out from Greenwood, MS, Payne Chapel Memorial Baptist Church in Quito, MS and Mt Zion Baptist Church in Morgan City, MS.
Sneaky Pete has a cache "Blues Time" at the site in Greenwood at Little Zion Missionary Church. Recent evidence points to Little Zion as the FRP. The wife of the man who dug the grave identified his grave spot.
Back in the 1990 November-December issue of Living Blues Magazine, Payne Chapel Church, near Quito, was declared to be the resting place for Robert Johnson. One of Robert's ex-girlfriends said so, so it had to be true. One story has it that Robert was moved to this cemetery from one of the other cemeteries. There are other family members buried nearby. This cache is placed near this gravesite which is marked with a simple headstone with the inscription, "Resting in the Blues."
The death certificate just lists Zion Baptist Church as his burial site. So in 1991, Sony Records erected a monument to honor Johnson at the Mount Zion Baptist Church graveyard near Morgan City, Ms. This monument is the most elaborate of the three.
As you see, it's all too confusing.
The cache is a camoed match safe and is not in the cemetery.
