Geocache Description:

The path through south wood is up hill and if you have walked the whole of the route you may be ready for a sit down by the time you get here. Don't worry there is a bench at the top of the hill

Philips park was officially declared as Burys first local nature reserve in October 1999, a designation that recognises it's importance for wildlide, education and recreation to the local community. The park owes it's name to the Philips family who owned the land from 1799 to 1948. They were responsible for the construction of the buildings and for many of the landscape features such as the majestic beech trees, the iron railings and the layout of the fields and paths that can be seen today. The Philips family retained some earlier natural and manmade features when they set about landscaping the park, the most significant being the ancient woodlands of North Wood, Mid Wood and Mere Clough and a Medieval Deer Pale that marked the southern and eastern boundries The cache is a plastic container with small items and log. The is the fourth of 5 caches I have placed along the Circular route, details of the route can be found on a noticeboard in the car park next to the play area. Start your journey from the car park, going clockwise round the route heading for mid wood. The route should take you about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete, bringing you back to the car park where you started. The path through south wood is up hill if following the circular route clock wise and therefore may not be suitable for people in wheel chairs, however access to the cache location can be gained from the road if you drive past the play area and down towards Philips park hall (see clue) The main entrance to Philips park is on Park Lane in Whitefield. Limited car parking is available in the park
