Geocache Description:

The cache is located in a woody area just behind where the main estate house once stood and the former site of the park. There are no remains left to show the building or park ever existed, just a well kept grassy area surrounded by trees

Philips park was officially declared as Burys first local nature reserve in October 1999, a designation that recognises it's importance for wildlide, education and recreation to the local community. The park owes it's name to the Philips family who owned the land from 1799 to 1948. They were responsible for the construction of the buildings and for many of the landscape features such as the majestic beech trees, the iron railings and the layout of the fields and paths that can be seen today. The Philips family retained some earlier natural and manmade features when they set about landscaping the park, the most significant being the ancient woodlands of North Wood, Mid Wood and Mere Clough and a Medieval Deer Pale that marked the southern and eastern boundries The cache is a plastic container with small items and log. The is the fifth of 5 caches I have placed around the Circular route, though you have to make a slight detour to find this one (Could be your first to find if you decide to go anti clockwise round the circular route), details of the route can be found on a noticeboard in the car park next to the play area. Start your journey from the car park, going clockwise round the route heading for mid wood. The route should take you about an hour to complete, bringing you back to the car park where you started. Many years ago you would have seen the Philips family home on this site with the formal gardens across the road through the trees. Here you could once have enjoyed the surroundings whilst having a drink from the garden cafe. Unfortunately this closed down and only the boarded up windows and doors remain. The main entrance to Philips park is on Park Lane in Whitefield. Limited car parking is available in the park
