In 1880 the Northern Pacific Railway established this train stop for fuel and water for the steam engines. This stop, 13 miles north of Connell, Wa. was called Twin Wells.
In 1890 James Bronson built a store and postoffice. The town was established as Hatton. John Hackett was the railroas agent and His wife Belle (Sutton) was the postmaster. Hence the name change to Ha tton
By 1902 the town consisted of 20 business and residences, 4 warehouses, 5 general stores, 2 hotels, 1 bank, a newspaper, and a school. By 1904 the population hit 250, declining to 167 by 1910.
In 1920, the area already hard hit by drought, was devistated by fire, destroying surrounding crops and much of the business district. Most of the population decided not to rebuild and moved on. By the end of 1920, the population had declined to 87.
Hatton's one claim to fame came when Paramont studios filmed a scene for the movie "Wild Harvest" staring Clark Gable on one of the ranches west of Hatton.
In the 1960's Hatton was the smallest incorporated town and had the longest serving mayor of any town in the state. Harold Johnson served as mayor continuously for some 50 years.
