BOGEVIKEN är idag en lagunliknande insjö, men var under vikingatid en av Gotlands bäst skyddade och viktigaste hamnar. Minst två vikingtida hamnar har funnits här. Den ena vid Bogevikens västra strand, intill Boge kyrka, den andra innanför nuvarande hamnen i Slite.
Härifrån seglade vikingarna iväg på sina långa handelsresor österut. Hit kom även utländska handelsresande.
De många fynden av silverskatter vid de båda hamnarna vittnar om en livlig handel
Vid Spillings, norr om Bogeviken, påträffades på sommaren 1999 världens hittills största vikingatida silverskatt, dess vikt c:a 68 kg.
Boxen som innehåller loggbok, penna, mugglarinfo samt div, bytessaker ligger ute på Bredvikens-udde, ett kärt tillhåll för en idrottstokig ynglig som för 65 år sedan på de mossmjuka stränderna, drömde om ärofulla löparrekord livligt påhejad av skräniga måsar och anfallande tärnor. (Ack ja—vackra dröm--vart tog Du vägen).

The Boge Creek is today a lagoon looking lake, but was during the Viking Age one of the best protected and important harbours. At least 2 Viking Age harbours has been here. One on the left side of Bogeviken (close to Boge Church), the other inside the present harbour in Slite.
From here the Vikings sailed on their long trading trips to the Orient, and here came foreign commercial travellers.
The many finds of silver treasures at both harbours testifies to a lively trading.
At Spillings – north of Bogeviken – the up till now greatest silver treasures from the Viking Age – was found here during the Summer of 1999. A weight of abt. 68 kg.
The box - containing logbook, pencil, muggler-info and various trading items – is placed at the spit of Bredviken, a ear haunt for a sport-mad youth, who 65 years ago on the mossy soft beaches dreamed about glorious running records, animated by noisy seagulls and attacking sea swallos. (Oh yes – beautiful dream – where did you go).
