Het heggengebied is een beschermd natuurgebied (800jaar oud) dat bij de ruilverkaveling gespaard is gebleven. De hollebollige weilanden zijn ontstaan omdat het veen in de middeleeuwen is vergraven. Dit veen werd gebruik als brandstof en er werd zout uit gewonnen. Na het vergraven werd de grond niet geëgaliseerd. Op de smalle weitjes bij het gebied graasden vroeger runderen. De heggen werden aangeplant als ondoordringbare afscheiding voor het vee. Die oude functie wil Natuurmonumenten weer herstellen. Er moet weer een dichte haag ontstaan van meidoorns, koebraam, hondsroos en vlier, deze biedt dan een grote rijkdom aan planten en vogels.

The hedges territory is a protected nature reserve (800 years old) that by the re-allotment has been remained. The round pastures have arisen because of the burial of a peat bog in the middle ages. This peat bog was used for fuel and to obtain salt from the bog's water. After the burial, the ground was not levelled. On the narrow meadows by the territory, cows had grazed. The hedges were planted as impenetrable separation for the cattle. The natural monument wants that barrier to be repaired. There, a dense hedge must arise of hawthorns, cow sea-bream, roserose rose and elder tree. These would also offer a large wealth of resources and habitats to plants and birds.
