Geocache Description:

Small lock-n-lock hidden at Dix Hills Park. Contains some items for pursuers of the dreaded round ball, and some for others as well.

I thought that chestnut trees were practically extinct, wipedout by a blight, but when doing another cache, "You missed the best part", I came across a botanical posting by a chestnut tree. Since then, I've noticed them in many parks while geocaching. They can be recognized by their long (6") serrated leaves, or by the saplings sprouting from the roots of a dead trunk. The two largest chestnuts I've seen are located in this park. One can be found at the waypoints below, finding the other is left as an exercise for the student. More can be learned about the chestnuts predicament at (visit link)
You can park and start your journey at the hornet's nest trailhead. Enjoy the tour.
