Vista Ridge - Another cache celebrating what makes our north state special, vistas north and south, east and west.
Combine the views from Vista Ridge with another feature famous in our area, recreation trails following remnants of the Gold Rush days and you have a geo-adventure. This cache is on BLM land that has been developed extensively in recent years and makes trail-travel possible from Mary Lake to Whiskeytown.
Vista Ridge is named for a mine that was “covered up and closed forever” in 2007. The trail that runs from this cache heads past the Vista Mine to Meiner’s Loop and several fine caches. As you travel the trails, notice the cuts made into the hillsides where miners were exploring for gold veins. There were several mines in this area, in addition to the Vista mine, that as recently as 2007 had shacks, open mine shafts and excavating equipment still present.
While most cachers may take the most direct route from the turn-out where Swasey Drive crests, I would suggest parking in the BLM parking lot west of the Straight Arrow Archery Club. Coordinates are listed. Take any of the trails north. I like riding counter-clockwise from the pipe gate, to the crest of Vista Ridge and then heading towards Mule Mountain, to the west.
The trail, on Vista Ridge was completed in late 2007 and has no poison oak! Runners, equestrians and bikers will love this area.
