Silver Bluff
Audubon Center & Sanctuary
The National Audubon Society owns or operates more than 100
education centers and wildlife sanctuaries across the country,
totaling 150,000 acres. Silver Bluff, situated along the Savannah
River, is an integral component of that system. With 3,154 acres of
upland pine forest, hardwood bottomlands, open fields, lakes and
streams; it is typical of much of the upper Atlantic Coastal Plain
of Georgia and the Carolinas.
Silver
Bluff History
Native Americans inhabited the Central Savannah River Valley at
least 11,500 years ago. By 100 A.D., several villages or "mound
centers" existed in the region. In 1540, the Spanish explorer
Hernando de Soto and a force of 625 men passed through the area in
their search for the town of Cofitachequi. This Native American
town was the center of a territory reportably rich in gold, though
de Soto found none. The wealth of "silver" present was actually
mica and other minerals that still shine in the high bluffs rising
above the Savannah River. The English explorer Henry Woodward
attached the name Silver Bluff during his visits in the 1680s.
The Crywolf
Falls Cache
Crywolf Falls cache will take you through much of this historic
and peaceful sanctuary.
Stage 1 will get you started on the right road. Instructions for
the rest of the cache will be found here.
Stage 2 will take you through a few Native American mound
centers and Native American burial grounds. (Some say you can still
hear the war cries of the long passed Native American
Warriors.)
Stage 3 will give you a break at the disappearing stream. (Named
for the way the stream disappears back underground, very cool
site)
Stage 4 is the final cache site where you will find Crywolf
falls and several other waterfalls. These falls are fed by natural
springs that make the falls appear to come from nowhere. (How cool
is that!)

So bring your cameras and hiking sticks. Please take lots of
pictures and post them here. I would love to see the expression on
your face when you reach the final cache. Plan on spending a few
hours here since it is so beautiful that you may not want to leave
for some time. Difficulty and Terrain are rated pretty high for one
reason (you will have to see it to understand), but you should have
no problem reaching the cache.
P.S. In order to get a smiley you must read
and follow the
instructions in the final cache very closely!
(Hence the mystery of the mystery
cache.)
Congratulations to
