Geocache Description:

PAINTED TREE is one of four caches in the “Ammo Cans in the Woods” series located along the Lower McAlpine Creek and McMullen Creek Greenway which is incredible for hiking or biking. There is nothing better than strolling through the woods on a nice day (or even a not-so-nice) day and enjoying the fresh air and the beauty of nature…unless there’s an ammo can geocache to be found - oh yeah!! Micros and puzzles and multis are all great too, but this “Ammo Cans in the Woods” series is for the geocacher who likes to get outdoors, brave the elements, smell the roses, and find a box full of cool treasures hidden in the forest. We love this stuff. The series includes: CASTLEKEEP, PAINTED TREE, ROCK CANYON, and MIRROR LAKE.

There are a couple of ways to seek these caches: you can walk the length of this stretch of greenway and make a day of it; or you can search for these caches one at a time by visiting their individual pages and studying the cache names and the map of the greenway provided in this link: (visit link) Either way, you’ll be outdoors in a great place with treasures to find. There will be some bushwhacking involved in your travels, but the intrepid geocacher should welcome this aspect of the hunt.

The total length of the greenway is four miles, and the cache route covers about three miles. Plan a whole day around your search for these caches, or tackle them one or two at a time - just have fun and enjoy being outside! As always, be on the lookout for muggles, and please put everything back just like you found it. Kids love searching for “treasure caches” like this, so be sure that you “leave” as well as you “take” in order to keep the caches full and fun for everyone.

The inspiration for this series comes from jjb79792’s excellent series at Colonel Francis Beatty Park, and I appreciate his advice for “Ammo Cans in the Woods”.

Many thanks to caching brother BigBendAddict for his floodproofing efforts and help in keeping this fun series going.
